The Department of Fire Protection Engineering offers a flexible program of study within the Master of Science and Master of Engineering programs. Students work with the help of an advisor to formulate a course of study based on a particular set of interests. Many students select a set of courses concerned with the science of fire, addressing fundamentals of diffusion flame combustion, mechanics of flame propagation, and prediction of fire development. A second set of courses selected by some students leads to a concentration in simulation and risk analysis, including courses in analytical procedures for the quantitative assessment of fire hazard and the probabilities of potential fire incidents. Other courses of study can be arranged by approval of the department faculty, and in conjunction with a faculty advisor.

Candidates for the Master of Science Degree must complete a thesis. In addition to the general rules of the Graduate School, certain special degree requirements are set out in departmental requirements.
